Key Stage 4

Meaning

The gas tests are a series of experiments used to identify which gas has been produced in a chemical reaction.

The Gas Tests

Carbon Dioxide

  1. Use a delivery tube to bubble the gas through Limewater.
  2. If the Limewater turns from transparent to cloudy then the gas is Carbon Dioxide.

Hydrogen

  1. Collect the gas in a test tube.
  2. Place a lit splint over the mouth of the test tube.
  3. If a 'squeaky pop' sound is made then the gas is Hydrogen.

Oxygen

  1. Collect the gas in a test tube.
  2. Place a glowing splint over the mouth of the test tube.
  3. If the splint relights then the gas is Oxygen.

Chlorine

  1. Collect the gas in a test tube.
  2. Place a piece of litmus paper over the mouth of the test tube.
  3. If the litmus paper is bleached white then the gas is Chlorine.
