Key Stage 4

Meaning

Investigate the effects of a variable on the temperature change during the reaction between two chemicals.

Method

Temperature Change and Volume of Alkali used to Neutralise an Acid

  1. Measure exactly 30ml 2M Hydrochloric Acid using a Measuring Cylinder.
  2. Add the 30ml of Hydrochloric Acid to a polystyrene cup.
  3. Add a lid with thermometer through the middle to measures the starting temperature of the solution.
  4. Using Measuring Cylinder (that has not been used for the acid) measure exactly 5ml 2M Sodium Hydroxide solution.
  5. Briefly remove the lid to add the 5ml Sodium Hydroxide solution to the polystyrene cup.
  6. Return the lid immediately and stir with the thermometer while observing the temperature. Once the temperature stops increasing, record this temperature.
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 until a total of 40ml of Sodium Hydroxide solution has been added.
  8. Repeat the experiment another 2 times to calculate an average for each result.
