Key Stage 3

A diagram of the nervous system.

Meaning

The nervous system is an organ system which detects changes in the environment and allows the body to respond to those changes.

About the Nervous System

The nervous system is made of the brain, the nerves and the sensory organs.
Drugs can affect the nervous system changing they way an animal senses changes in the environment and how quickly they can respond to them.

Key Stage 4

A diagram of the nervous system.

Meaning

The Nervous System is an organ system which sends electrical impulses around the body to detect changes in the environment and respond to those changes.

About the Nervous System

The nervous system consists of the Central Nervous System (made of the brain and spinal cord and the Peripheral Nervous System (the other nerve and the sense organs).
The nervous system coordinates movements of an organism.
Stimulants affect the nervous system by increasing the speed of electrical impulses in the nerves. This decreases reaction time.
Depressants affect the nervous system by decreasing the speed of electrical impulses in the nerves. This increases reaction time.
